Plungapalooza 2009 Tomorrow
January 23rd, 2009 Categories: Crofton Events
There doesn’t seem to be a lot going on in the Crofton area tomorrow, so there could be a blank page in your social calendar. May I suggest you head on down to Sandy Point State Park, along with about 25–30,000 other people, for Plungapalooza 2009.
The park opens at 8 a.m., and there will be a lot of activities throughout the day for everyone, ranging from food to live music and pageants to a live pig race. No kidding, a pig race! And yes, there will be a heated tent… but don’t worry because the forecast calls for a 40–degree high temperature – almost balmy for a January day in Maryland.
The highlight of the day, however, will be the 13th annual Polar Bear Plunge sponsored by the Maryland State Police (with the support of several local businesses) to benefit Maryland Special Olympics.Even if you haven’t signed up to “plunge” into the icy Chesapeake yet, you can still participate by simply printing out the registration form and bringing it with you. (And you should probably print out these tips for first-time plungers, as well.) There were over 8,000 plungers in 2008, and as many as 10,000 are expected this year. The Polar Bear Plunge will take place between 1 and 3 p.m., and I’m betting you’ll find someone there you know.
A full schedule for the Plungapalooza 2009 is posted online, and this parking guide could be the most important information you’ll find there. Enjoy!

Did I say balmy? The morning was overcast and very windy, and I cannot imagine anyone participating in the plunge. ‘Listening to WBAL, they’re saying the beach itself is icy, and the water temperature is 33 degrees. Congratulations to anyone who braved that.
