Relocating families transferring to Maryland from other areas of the country to work in D.C. often choose Bowie over Crofton. In fact, moving from the Crofton area to Bowie has become a more frequent occurrence in recent months and years, for a number of reasons.
Here are the top five reasons for buying in Bowie:
1. Home prices – No doubt about it… homes tend to cost less in Bowie than a similar home in Crofton – by $100,000 or more. Faced with the choice of buying a condo in Crofton or a 4 bedroom detached home with garage and a big fenced yard in Bowie at the same price, its “no contest” in the minds of many home buyers.
2. Location – As traffic in the greater Crofton area worsened, commuting to D.C. and Northern Virginia from Bowie became more attractive for workers eager to spend more time with their families and less time in their cars.

Community – From youth sports and scouts for the kids to garden club and the Chamber of Commerce for grown-ups, Bowie is a place where people have a sense of “community.” And there’s no shortage of recreation facilities ranging from public parks to gyms to a golf course where Bowie children play golf without charge.
4. Schools – My clients tell me they’re very happy with Bowie schools. In fact, my grandchildren and their parents love Whitehall Elementary and they loved Kenilworth Elementary before that.
5. Shopping, Restaurants and Entertainment – Commercial development in Bowie over the past ten years has made this city a destination location for dining, entertainment, and shopping. Bowie residents enjoy the convenience of having so many choices within minutes of home.
If you’re renting, now might be a good time to take a look at Bowie for all of the above reasons. PLUS, the City of Bowie is collaborating with the Prince George’s County Council and the Maryland Department of Housing to offer the City Workforce and Bowie First programs. These will provide $1,000 in closing assistance to eligible home buyers, and the Maryland Mortgage Program will provide matching funds for a total of $2,000.
