Facebook Safety for Crofton Kids (and parents, too)
August 31st, 2010 Categories: Communities
If you’re a proud parent of a Crofton teenager or pre-teen, I’m sure you’re well aware that your kids spend a lot of time on Facebook. It seems harmless enough, especially if you’ve taken the time to become a Facebook “expert” – or hired one such as Kidsafe.me.
The truth is that Facebook and other online social sites might not be as harmless as you think – but that’s a topic for another day…
I just want to share this one little thing with you today: PLACES. It’s explained (from the biased Facebook perspective) on the Facebook Blog. In a nutshell, unless you or your child disable PLACES on his/her Facebook page, your child’s movement can be tracked by a stalker, bully, or sexual predator.
Here’s how to disable PLACES:
Go to “Account”, “Account Settings”, “Notifications”…
then scroll down to “Places” and uncheck the 2 boxes…
Make sure to SAVE these changes.

Now, after you make sure that’s done on your own child’s Facebook pages, share this info with a friend. And don’t forget to check back once in a while to make sure these restrictions haven’t been changed by your teen or pre-teen on their Facebook page. They really don’t “get” how problematic this can be for their safety.
As Ronald Reagan used to say, “Trust but verify” – to help keep your Crofton kids safe.
