Crofton Christmas Tree Lighting Is Next Week
November 21st, 2010 Categories: Crofton News
Whether you’re new to Crofton or a long-time resident, you don’t want to miss the annual Christmas-tree lighting in front of Crofton Country Club on Monday, November 29, at 7 p.m. Be sure to dress warmly and come early so you can enjoy holiday music led by the Seton Choir, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Look for Santa to arrive on the back of a fire truck and plan on going into the clubhouse so your kids can have a brief visit and photo with Santa. (And bring YOUR camera!)
This event is one of Crofton’s favorite traditions, and it’s been commemorated in a Christmas ornament re-issued this year by the Crofton Kiwanis. You can purchase it by contacting Marnie_Fallon@hotmail.com or 410–451–3998.

Schools Honor Substitute Teachers Today
November 19th, 2010 Categories: Crofton News
On the closing day of this year’s American Education Week, Crofton schools and schools across the country are celebrating Substitute Educators Day to honor the teachers who step up, often on short notice, to substitute for regular classroom teachers.
Support staff, community leaders and even parents were honored earlier this week, spotlighting many of the essential contributors to American Education. Apparently, no one does “education” better than Maryland, so we have a lot to celebrate.
Maryland Schools Rank #1 Again This Year (click on link for more), but that’s not all. They also won a $250 Million Dollar Race to the Top Grant to strengthen student achievement in struggling schools and reduce gaps in achievement in student subgroups.
If you’re relocating to the Crofton area, the following information about local schools and their feeder systems may be helpful to you:

Long Lines Signal Checkers Opening in Crofton
November 14th, 2010 Categories: Crofton News
The new Checkers® is open in Crofton, on Rt. 424 near Kmart. The long lines of people and cars we saw on Saturday suggest that it’s a welcome addition to the fast food scene in this area. The line was too long for me, but presumably it will settle down in the coming weeks – I look forward to checking it out when that happens.
Checkers® features two drive-thru lanes and a walk-up window where “full-flavored, hand seasoned burgers, thick shakes and famous seasoned fries” are sold.
The mission of Checkers®/Rally® is to “serve top-quality meals at a great value with Guest-Obsessed© hospitality, speed and accuracy at our double drive-thru lanes, and to foster a culture where employees are well-trained and well rewarded and franchisees are supported in their endeavors to better the brand.” That’s a mouthful right there!
Here’s a link to the Checkers® menu. Check it out!

Haunted House at the Baysox Stadium
October 28th, 2010 Categories: Crofton News

Witness the chaos of a research project gone horribly wrong this weekend, as you explore the extremely haunted house at Bowie Baysox Stadiu, just 5 minutes south of Crofton on Route 301. Gates and the box office will open at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Saturday, and again on Sunday.
Lines from sundown until 11 p.m. It’s all indoors on the upper deck level of the stadium, so no need to worry about rain, but dress for cooler temperatures.
Tulip Gulch Productions has teamed with the Bowie Baysox to create the most intense haunted house you’ve ever seen, “The Patuxent Research Lab,” featuring gobs of special effects, props, and live actors. It promises to be VERY scary! (Lots of screaming coming from in there.)
Baltimore Sun reviewers had this to say:
“It was fantastic! There was literally no way to see everything they had going on in this place just by going through once! They had the BEST PROPS by far we have EVER SEEN in all of the haunted attractions we have ever been to. I mean just totally blows everything away crazy…”
I spoke to someone at the Baysox ticket office, and she indicated that teens and adults will enjoy this experience (well, maybe “enjoy” isn’t exactly the right word) but they want you to leave toddlers and kids under 13 at home because images and themes may not be appropriate for children.
Purchase tickets online, or select the Speed Pass Option at the ticket office to shorten your wait. And don’t forget to LIKE the Patuxent Research Lab on Facebook

Help Fill Holiday Gift Bags for Deployed Troops
October 6th, 2010 Categories: Crofton News

October is not too soon for Crofton folks to think about Christmas… Hanukkah… or “The Holidays”. In fact, ’tis the season for filling holiday gift bags to send deployed U.S. troops, and we need LOTS of help to fill 150 of them.
In cooperation with OperationGive.org, my Long & Foster colleagues are collecting gifts to fill the bags October 15–16.
Please help us by dropping off some inexpensive gifts appropriate for a Christmas stocking or holiday gift bag.

The drop-off location is 2191 Defense Highway, #120, Crofton, MD 21114, and the drop-off dates are next week, October 11–14.
Thank you for your help!
