Texas Roadhouse in Bowie – Check it out!
July 26th, 2009 Categories: Restaurants
Did you know that Texas Roadhouse has a restaurant location in Bowie, on Rt. 450 between Rt. 197 and Rt. 193?
We have literally not taken that road in years, even though it’s very near Crofton, so we did not know there’s now a shopping center at Rt. 450 and Highbridge Road, across from Melvin Motors. The way we found it was by looking up locations for Texas Roadhouse online after a GREAT steak at the one in Hagerstown, Maryland, where we stopped en route home from Milwaukee.
You’ll find a small pail of peanuts, plus a second one for discarding your shells when you’re first seated at your table at Texas Roadhouse. Service is fast, but you’ll never notice if it’s not because you’ll be busy with those peanuts. The bread is served warm, and the spread has a tinge of cinnamon. (Note to anyone allergic to peanuts – Do NOT visit this restaurant!)
If you’ve never dined at Texas Roadhouse in Bowie, Maryland, let me suggest you try the Fort Worth Rib-eye or the Sirloin Kabob.
We love our steak dinners, and we’re regulars at both Outback and Texas Longhorn. Now, however, we can add Texas Roadhouse in Bowie to the options. It’s only about 15 minutes from Crofton, heading West on Rt. 450.

Try Rips in Bowie for the World’s Best Reuben
June 1st, 2009 Categories: Restaurants
We no longer order a Reuben anywhere else because we know it will not measure up to those at Rip’s in Bowie.
In fact, Rip’s is always on the list of favorite local restaurants I give to relocating homebuyers, along with the notation “World’s Best Reuben.” But I’m not hesitant to try something different at Rip’s, and I’ve never been disappointed. My other lunch-time favorites include their Crab Melt Sandwich and their Quiche, while Larry likes Eggs Montoya.
Check out their menus for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner online – you’ll see their prices are as good as their food. And speaking of their food, everything is made from scratch with fresh ingredients, using recipes that have been favorites of Rip’s customers since the restaurant opened in 1952.

Rip’s menu and quality food are not the only things that set them apart from the many franchise restaurants in the Bowie-Crofton-Gambrills corridor. Their decor is a unique reminder of Bowie’s place in American history as the “Cradle of American thoroughbred racing.” In fact, booths are constructed like horse stalls and each bears the name of a famous racehorse.
Attached to Rips is their liquor store and Deli, and behind Rips is lodging. We haven’t tried them, but I surely do recommend Rip’s Country Inn!
Here is their address, if you’d like to enter it into your GPS: 3809 N. Crain Highway, Bowie, MD. 20716.
Directions: From Crofton, go South on Rt. 3 past Rt. 50, and look for it on your left. From Annapolis, go West on Rt. 50 to Rt. 3 South, and Look for it on your left.

‘Tis the Season for Sly Horse Tavern in Crofton
April 10th, 2009 Categories: Restaurants
At the first sign of Spring, umbrellas go up in front of Sly Horse Tavern on the Village Green and diners settle in at tables on the brick-paved area in front for a good meal, cold drink and breath of clean fresh Spring air. Whether it’s lunch in the sun (or shade, depending on where you’re seated) or dinner under the stars, Sly Horse is a place that locals really enjoy dining.
The ambiance is what attracts me year ‘round – That’s where I get my “fireplace fix” in winter, now that I live in a home without a fireplace… and who doesn’t love the colonial Williamsburg-style interior… but dining outside on the Village Green is my favorite. Even when I opt for the relief of air conditioning on a blistering hot summer day, I enjoy a view of the Village Green through the window.
My personal preference would be for 21st century tavern standards – you know, Burgers and Reubens and the like, but I guess you can get that anywhere. Sly Horse Tavern features more elaborate menu selections such as “Veal Roulade Stuffed with Sweet Italian Sausage, Wild Mushrooms and Arugula, Finished with a Roasted Red Pepper Sauce” at $22.50. Even though that’s not my personal taste, their selections obviously appeal to a lot of other people because Sly Horse Tavern has been in business for over 20 years.
You will find Sly Horse Tavern at the Crofton Village Green surrounded by small businesses and professional offices, just inside the main gates of “Old Crofton” on Route 3. It’s a great place to book your next private party such as a rehearsal dinner or office celebration, and they offer a catering menu for off-premises events, as well. If you live or work anywhere in the Greater Crofton area and haven’t yet dined at the Sly Horse, I highly recommend it – especially on a beautiful Spring Day.
