Crofton Village Green Summer Concerts 2013

Free Summer Concerts on the Crofton Village Green

It’s that time of year again when summer begins to unfold on our calendars. A favorite family event for many Crofton area residents is the Sunday evening concert series at the Crofton Village Green. Here’s the schedule for 2013:

Village Green Summer Concert2June 2 –  Pocket Change –  Formed in 1997 by a group of music teachers. Their easy listening music including Big Band, Latin, Oldies Rock and Roll, Swing, and Standards

June 23 –  Big Band Caliente – An 18 piece jazz band reminiscent of the Cuban Big Bands in the 40’s and 50’s, performing traditional and modern jazz with a Latin twist.

June 30 –  Tom Lagana Group – A protege of legendary jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd, Tom and his band perform jazz standards and more.

July 7 –  Annapolis Bluegrass Coalition – Thrilling audiences with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music..

July 14 –  Ruth Capobianco – A solo vocal artist performing cabaret music.

Bring your lawn chairs or blanket, bug spray and cold drinks, and enjoy this very special Crofton tradition.

Reminders for each of the Crofton summer concerts will be posted on Crofton News and Views on Facebook during the week preceding the event, so be sure to “Like” this Facebook page.

Crofton Trash Pick-Up on President’s Day

Monday, February 18, is a Federal Holiday.

Portrait of George WashingtonThis holiday was initially created by an Act of Congress in 1879 for the City of Washington, D.C. to honor George Washington on his February 22 birthday, but it became a federal holiday just six years later.

Another Act of Congress, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, moved the celebration of George Washington’s Birthday to the third Monday of February and also designated Memorial Day (last Monday in May) and Columbus Day (second Monday in October) to a Monday, so Federal workers could have more three-day weekends. While the holiday was not officially renamed in that Act, it has become known as President’s Day – possibly because it falls between Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday, earlier in February.

Will there be trash pick-up in Crofton on President’s Day? Yes, both trash and recycle crews will be hard at work tomorrow on their regularly scheduled routes. County libraries will also be open, but not public schools or Federal, State, and County government offices.

Banks, courts, post offices and senior centers will be closed, as well, and MARC trains will not be operating. Metro rail and bus will be running on a Saturday schedule and Annapolis buses will maintain its usual Monday schedule.

Winter Gardening for Crofton Home Owners

Some Crofton residents tell me their green thumb is itching to do some gardening, and next weekend offers some great opportunities to exercise that thumb without spending time in the cold.

House finch (Carpodacus mexicanus )January 19 and 20 is Birding Weekend at nearby Homestead Gardens’ two locations, in Davidsonville and Severna Park.

Don’t have any kids to build or paint a birdhouse?  No worries, bring the grandkids.  Or skip the birdhouse activities and attend the sessions on Wintering Raptors or Gardening for Wildlife.

There will be other winter workshops weekly throughout the coming months. Visit Homestead Gardens website for more information.

Santa Photos for Your Pooch

Dog with SantaTake your pet to Petsmart in Annapolis on Saturday and get a Santa photo to share with your family and friends.

Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue (OBG) is sponsoring the event as a fundraiser to help finance their work.  Our dog, Patsy, is an OBG alum and we’re so impressed with their tireless efforts to place dogs in new “forever” homes.  Some of these dogs come into OBG in need of medical care, and they rely upon fundraisers and donations to make this possible.

Like OBG on Facebook  or visit their Oldies But Goodies Cocker Spaniel Rescue website to find out how you can adopt a dog.  If you’re not interested in a long term relationship with a pet, perhaps you would consider fostering a dog (or two or three) until they can be adopted.

Everyone is welcome to come for a Santa photo on Saturday. Petsmart is located at 2601 Housley Rd Annapolis, Maryland 21401.
