Maryland Schools Rank 3rd in Nation

Classrrom4Maryland Schools have climbed from 25th in 2006 to 3rd in 2008 under the leadership of Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick.  Only Massachusetts and New York rank higher than Maryland schools this year in the the 12th annual Quality Counts report in Education Weekly, released today.

These three school systems received a grade of “B”, while Virginia ranked 5th with a B– and the District of Columbia is at the bottom of the chart with a D+.

This is how each of the local school systems scored in the six categories, which are weighted equally:

Maryland Virginia D.C.
Chance for Success B+ B C
K-12 B+ C F
Assessments/Accountability B+ A C+
Transitions/Alignment B+ C+ D+
Teaching Profession C- B- D-
Finance B  C+ N/A

To learn more, read Grading the States and State Highlights Report in Education Week.

You can view the entire report for Maryland schools in PDF format.

I found it interesting that no school west of Arkansas received better than a C-rating, and the highest concentration of B ratings occurred in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic States.  One notable exception, of course, is the District of Columbia.  (Note – D.C. schools were not rated for Finance.)

A few weeks ago, I posted a Report Card for Crofton Middle & High Schools and Crofton Schools Report Card so Crofton, Maryland, residents could look at education on the local level.  As I mentioned last month, Crofton teachers deserve a lot of the credit for excellent schools in our Crofton-area communities.
