School Redistricting Meeting Last Night

Moving kids from one Crofton-area school to anotherCrofton-area school re-districting was the topic of a briefing held last night at Four Seasons Elementary School, as the School Board reported on proposals impacting Crofton Elementary, Crofton Middle, Piney Orchard Elementary, Four Seasons Elementary, Odenton Elementary, Arundel High, and Waugh Chapel Elementary School.

As I’ve mentioned before, the quality of schools can greatly impact the property values of any community.  Last night, however, the focus was on the impact proposed changes could have on families living in the Crofton area.  Change is never easy, and this is no exception.

Here are the items on last night’s agenda:

1.  “Gambrills Area” Elementary to Crofton Middle School and Arundel High School. (Superintendent’s Recommendation)

2.  The redistricting of a portion of the Piney Orchard Community to Four Seasons Elementary School. (Superintendent’s Recommendation)

3.  Redistricting of students not living in the community of Piney Orchard, but attending the Kiddie Academy, from Piney Orchard Elementary School to Four Seasons Elementary School. (Superintendent’s Recommendation )

4.  Reassignment of the kindergarten students currently attending Piney Orchard Elementary to Four Seasons Elementary, with those students returning to Piney Orchard Elementary School for grades 1-5. (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

5.  Redistricting of Piney Orchard Elementary School students along North Patuxant Road to Odenton Elementary School. (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

6.  Redistricting of Odenton Elementary School from “the ramp off of Highway 32, off Burns Crossing Road, East to Route 3” to Four Seasons Elementary School. (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

7.  Redistricting of Waugh Chapel Elementary School from “Dairy Farm Road, East/Southeast to Route 3” to Four Seasons Elementary School. (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

8.  Re-district from Crofton Elementary School the area referred to as “East Walden” from Crofton Elementary School to Crofton Meadows Elementary School. (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

9.  Establish boundaries for the new “Gambrills Area” Elementary School to include the “Towns of Walden and Chapman Farms.” (West Side of Route 3 Alternate Redistricting Proposal)

10. Redistricting of the community of Cobblestone at Farmington Village from Freetown Elementary School, Marley Middle School and Glen Burnie High School to Solley Elementary School, George Fox Middle School and Northeast High School.

The briefing was intended to provide the community with clarification as to what redistricting options are being considered by the Board of Education. No public testimony was taken, but that didn’t prevent plenty of debate among attendees.  Like any re-districting plan, this one is not without controversy among those affected.  When I know more, I’ll pass it on.
