2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge Starts Today

With 17,000 miles of Maryland waterways, it’s no surprise that fishing is a popular Maryland sport.

Woman-fishingToday marked the beginning of the annual 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge which runs through September 1.   According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, more than 60 species of fish are eligible for the grand prizes.

Eligible fish include large and smallmouth bass, trout, walleye, musky and panfish in Maryland fresh waters.  In the Chesapeake Bay, the list includes rockfish, bluefish, drum, sea trout and perch.  Tuna, marlin, flounder, kingfish and sea bass are eligible species for oceanside anglers.  Catching a specially-tagged striped bass will qualify you for prizes franging from cash to a tee shirt or hat.

The contest is open to everyone – Maryland residents and non-residents alike, experienced anglers and kids just learning to fish.

In June, a specially tagged striped bass known as Diamond Jim will be released, along with some imposters.  The angler who makes that catch will win $25,000.  Other prizes for the 2008 Maryland Fishing Challenge include a 2008 Toyota Tundra 4×4, a boat and trailer, a prize package from Bill’s Outdoor, and a $5,000 diamond.  The season-long challenge ends with a big bash at Sandy Point State Park on September 1.

If this sounds like something you’d like to participate in this summer, here are links to the official website where you can get an entry form and check out the rules.
