Crofton Highway Changes Proposed

Villages at Waugh ChapelCrofton traffic patterns could see some changes soon, according to an engineer for the Maryland State Highway Department.  Greg Weller, speaking to the Greater Crofton Council, indicated the State is considering the addition of a fourth lane to both the north and south-bound sections of Maryland Route 3 between Waugh Chapel Road and Maryland Route 424.

The purpose of this project would be to relieve traffic congestion between Crofton and the planned Village at Waugh Chapel South, which will include additional homes, offices, shopping, restaurants, and a movie theater.  The developer, Greenberg-Gibbons, would pay for any road widening.

Members of the Greater Crofton Council expressed reservations about the proposal, citing the fact that Route 3 narrows to two lanes both north and south of this area, which will cause huge bottlenecks as traffic transitions from four lanes to three to two within a very short distance.

Another concern is the pedestrian traffic that now crosses Route 3 near the Village at Waugh Chapel.  While it is extremely hazardous now, it would be even more dangerous – if not impossible – with the addition of another lane.

It seems the only benefit to this proposal is the fact that the developer will pay for road widening between Waugh Chapel Road and Route 424.  Local residents, however, will pay the price in time and frustration as we cope with the added traffic created by Village at Waugh Chapel South.  No doubt we will wait years, maybe decades, for the State to come up with funds to improve Route 3 between Maryland Routes 32 and 50 to the same four lanes proposed for this small stretch of hgihway.
