REFLECTIONS – A Video for Women (and people who love them)

Crofton residents may assume this post is about breast cancer awareness, based on the title and knowing October is breast-cancer awareness month.  Actually, it’s about something different.

Reflections VideoReflections Body Image Program is about another situation affecting millions of women who have struggled with body image dissatisfaction at some time in their lives… Could it be you, your wife, your mother, daughter, neighbor, or best friend?

This is Fat Talk Free Week (October 13-17), a nationwide public awareness campaign designed to draw attention to the damaging impact of the “thin ideal” for women.

And it coincides with the official public debut of Reflections: Body Image Program – a revolutionary body image education and eating disorders prevention program co-developed by Carolyn Becker, Ph.D. FAED, of Trinity University, local sororities on her campus, and Delta Delta Delta Sorority’s Center for Living, Learning and Leading (under the leadership of my daughter Susan Woda, the Center’s Senior Director of Operations).

Seventeen Magazine, National Organization for Women (N.O.W.), the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) have endorsed Reflections, and it’s probably coming soon to a campus near you.  While this program is aimed specifically to college women, a “Fat Talk Free Week” sounds like a good idea for all of us to try.

For more information, check out the Reflections website and, if you didn’t already watch THIS VIDEO, check it out now.  It’s not clinical or lecturing, I promise.  ‘Just a catchy, creative and thought-provoking flash video that you will entertain while informing you.

Susan WodaP.S. – An update on my daughter Susan, for those of you who know her.

As I mentioned in this post, Susan is now the Senior Director of Operations for the Center for Living, Learning, and Leading, a Foundation affiliated with Tri-Delta for the purpose of creating educational (Reflections is their first) and fundraising programs for member chapters.  I didn’t mention she’s also the Senior Director of Operations for the Executive Office of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.  This job motivated her move to Texas, where she recently became a homeowner in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Meanwhile, Susan is working on her dissertation for a Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy and Leadership from the University of Maryland College Park, so she does get back to Maryland every few months.

Susan will be judging a Miss America local pageant in Texas next month, but she’s not serving on the State Board as she did in Maryland (at least not until that dissertation is finished).  And she’s playing golf when she can… the highlight of her year was a round at Doral in August.
