More Buses for Crofton Commuters?

What's in our transportation future?Your future may include boarding a bus in Crofton to reach nearby Fort Meade or the Odenton MARC Station, according to transportation consultant Fred Fravel.

More commuter buses are one solution proposed as an alternative to permanent improvements in state roads and highways, in the face of state cuts to the transportation budget.  Another benefit, of course, is that a bus route can be implemented with minimal planning, while road and highway improvements sometimes require years of planning and construction. Bus routes can also be revised easily, as needed.

It all makes sense in theory, but the traffic impact of buses on Routes 3 and 32 or 175 would be collateral damage.  I can’t help wondering if buses will help or hinder the situation during rush hour.  I’m sure there are experts who could argue this either way.

Some questions I have for planners:  Since work hours don’t always parallel traditional rush hour patterns, especially at Fort Meade, will buses operate ‘round the clock?  Will commuters take a bus home from work only to get in their cars and retrace their steps back to the bank and dry cleaner the bus passed, where they would have stopped on the way home if they were driving?  How many Crofton stops do you anticipate, since Chapman Farms or Crofton Village residents can’t walk to “Old” Crofton, and vice versa.

By the way, I don’t think that planning for either of these communities included provisions for bus traffic.  (And I think Crofton residents like NOT having buses on their neighborhood streets.)
