Texting While Driving = $500 Fine

By Guest Blogger, Andy Levy –

MARYLAND TEXTING WHILE DRIVING BAN GOES INTO EFFECT OCTOBER 1, 2009

DrivingWe all love our Blackberrys, iPhones and other text devices, but recently enacted legislation in Maryland, which becomes effective today (October 1, 2009), prohibits drivers in Maryland from using a text messaging device to write or send a text message while operating a motor vehicle in motion or in the travel portion of the roadway. The law prohibits typing and sending messages but does not prohibit reading them.

The prohibition does not apply to the use of a global positioning system (“GPS”) or using a text messaging device to contact a 9-1-1- system. Violation of this new statute is a misdemeanor and subjects the offender to a fine of up to $500.
