CTA Season Opens Next Week in Annapolis

Spotlights Tickets are on sale now for the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis production of Brundibar, playing October 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. and October 24 and 25 at 2 p.m.  Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $12 for youth under 12 and Seniors 65+.  All performances will be at their facility on Bay Head Road in Annapolis, off Rt. 50 before you get to Sandy Point State Park.

Special performances will be held on Thursday, October 22 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for home-schoolers, school groups and seniors.  These tickets are $5 each.

Kevin Wheatley is directing and Marsha Goldsmith is the music director for this show, which was written and first performed in the 1940’s as part of a plot by the Germans to deceive the world about their treatment of Jews.

It seems they briefly turned one of their Czechoslovakian concentration camps into a “model town” and invited the Red Cross to visit.  They even produced a movie to prove how well they treated the Jewish people in Terezin.

The movie included scenes from Brundibar, a children’s opera about a small boy and his sister who – with the help of a dog, cat, bird  and children in the village – defeated the evil organ grinder named “Brundibar”.

Only about 100 of the 11,000 children that passed through this camp survived, according to the CTA website, including Ela Stein Weissberger who played the cat in all 55 performances.  She will speak at the CTA productions next week, and she will autograph her books The Cat With the Yellow Star and The Girls in Room 28 after the show.

Kudos to the Children’s Theatre of Annapolis for selecting this show –I am certain that the show’s young performers will have significantly more interest in the history of this period than their peers in the classroom.  How could they not, after bringing history to life on stage through this show.

To purchase tickets, you have several options:

Children’s Theatre of Annapolis is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, and chances are that you or someone you know is an alum of the organization.  If you’re new to the area, I recommend you join CTA and encourage your children to participate in their workshops and theatre productions.
