Bowie Residents Face Deadline for Tree Credit

TreeMany Bowie residents lost trees over the past couple of years – not to storms, but to the Bowie Electric Reliability Action Plan implemented by BGE.

Homeowners are eligible to receive $100 credit for replacement of any tree removed by BGE from private property, provided the tree measured greater than 8 inches in diameter (4.5 feet above ground level).  Frankly, that describes a lot of trees in Bowie, doesn’t it?  Any trees near utility lines that look like the trees pictured here have probably already been removed from your yard… have you replaced them yet?

If you haven’t yet replaced your trees and/or received your credit, the time for procrastination is nearly over, so read on…

1.  The deadline for replacement is just days away… May 31, 2010.

2.  Replacement trees must be included on the tree list provided to Bowie residents, as follows:

Ornamental:

  • Crabapple
  • Crepe Myrtle
  • Dogwood – Kousa, Gray
  • Eastern Redbud
  • Franklinia
  • Goldenchain – Vossii
  • Hawthorne
  • Japanese Snowbell
  • Japanese Tree Lilac – Summer Snow, Ivory Silk
  • Serviceberry
  • Stewartia

Shade

  • Amur Maple
  • Japanese Red Maple – Bloodgood, Burgundy Lace
  • Paperback Maple
  • Trident Maple
  • Truncatum Maple – Norwegian Sunset, Pacific Sunset

Evergreen

  • Arborvitae – Nigra, Techny, Emerald
  • Chinese Juniper – Robusta Green, Spartan, Spearmint
  • Holly – Nellie R. Stevens, Foster

Hedges and Screens

  • Hollies – Japanese, Chinese, Blue
  • Juniper – Pfizter, Old Gold, Hetzii
  • Viburnum – Leatherleaf, Doublefile
  • Yews – Hicksii, Hatfield

3.  Trees must be obtained from a licensed nursery or landscape provider.

4.  A detailed receipt must note the type and purchase price of each tree.

5.  All receipts (if you have more than one) must be submitted together in one request, and postmarked no later than May 31, 2010.  Send your request, including your receipt(s), to:
