University of Maryland Hosts PGA Golf Tourney

UMD TVOne hundred fifty six PGA golf professionals will be competing on the golf course at University of Maryland College Park this week.

The Melwood Prince George’s County Open, sponsored by Under Armour, is part of the PGA Nationwide Tour – sort of the minor league of competitive professional golf.  You can watch it on the GOLF Channel thru the final round on Sunday or, better yet, come on out to College Park to see it first hand.

If you live in the local area, and haven’t yet discovered the University of Maryland Golf Course, you’re in for quite a treat.  In fact, you’ll quickly discover why this 7015 yard course has been recognized by Links Magazine as one of the Top 25 College Courses in the nation.

UMD Golf Course and Club HouseThe 150 acre recently-renovated UMD Golf Course, with tree-lined fairways and gently rolling hills, is located on the north side of Rt. 193 across from campus and Stadium Drive.  Mulligan’s Grill and Pub is the on-site restaurant and bar, open year-round, and a large banquet room overlooking the golf course is available for meetings and private parties.  With such a convenient location and such nice facilities, it is a popular outing site for corporations and organizations throughout the greater Washington, D.C. area as well as a favorite for university students, faculty, staff, club members and the public, who play golf their throughout the year.

Last year, the UMD Golf Course hosted the qualifying rounds for the Melwood Prince George’s County Open, held at Woodmore Country Club.  Organizers must have liked what they saw here because they chose to come back, not just for qualifying, but to host the tournament both this year and next.  As an added bonus, Terps basketball coach Gary Williams will serve as the tournament host.

UMD Golf CourseMany of the big-name PGA TOUR players you see participating in today’s majors are Nationwide Tour alumni.  In fact, former Nationwide Tour players have earned 250 PGA TOUR titles, including eleven major championships.  Twenty-nine tour events are played across the U.S. and six foreign countries competing for nineteen million dollars in prize money each year.  The purse for this tournament will be $600,000.

Admission ranges from $15 for a one-day grounds pass to $50 for the weekly grounds pass; clubhouse passes are $30/day or $100 for the week.  Military and kids under 12 will be admitted without charge to the grounds.
