Fun Things to Do Near Crofton This Weekend

Crofton Fun - COPYRIGHT Margaret Woda. Do Not Copy.

Looking for something to do in the Crofton area this weekend?  You won’t have to go very far…

Saturday, June 5 – Bowiefest 2010 (Rain date June 6), 11–6.  I haven’t been to Bowiefest in a few years, but I remember it as a fun local tradition that has something to see or do for everyone.

Allen Pond AmphitheaterEntertainers will perform at the Bowie Amphitheater and the East Pavilion Stage including the new Bowie Youth Chorus, Bowie’s Reptile World, Belair Square Cats, C&C Dance Company, Bowie’s Proverbs Reggae Band,40 Dollar Fine, Good Kemistry Band and Stavagant.

The Bowie Ice Arena will host a Business Expo to promote local businesses, and hand-made art & crafts will be offered for sale by vendors.  Kids will be entertained by face-painters and probably go home with a balloon.  You’ll learn about various community organizations who will have hand-outs to take home and, no doubt, local politicians will be there to shake your hand.

You certainly won’t go hungry because the Belle-Aires Twirlers are offering beef barbecue, the Bowie Xpress will have fish and chips for you, and the Collington Masons will be selling cotton candy.  You’ll also find soft-serve ice cream, Italian Sausage, frozen fruit drinks, fresh-squeezed lemonade and, of course, funnel cakes.  (What would an event like this be without funnel cakes?)

P6030086Sunday, June 6 – Annual Ice Cream Social in Odenton, 1–3.  Celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Odenton Heritage Society at the Museum located at 1367 Odenton Road.  It sounds like a lot of fun with costumed historians on hand, entertainment by local talent including a Barbershop Quartet, prizes for children dressed in historic costumes, a vintage hat contest, raffles and… HAND-DIPPED ICE CREAM.

There will be free admission for children under 6 and tickets sold at the door for adults ($7) and older children ($4.50).  All proceeds will go to the restoration of the Historical Center.

Crofton Village Green

Sunday, June 6 – Summer Concert at the Crofton Village Green, 6–8.  Bring your own lawn chair for the first concert of the summer, featuring local band, “The Pocket Change”.  There’s plenty of parking available on both the north and south sides of the Village Green, or maybe you just want to ride your bike or walk from home.

Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6 – Melwood Prince George’s County Open.   Don’t forget about this PGA Nationwide Tour event, just a half hour from Crofton.  If you missed my post about it on Wednesday, here’s a link:  University of Maryland hosts PGA Golf Tourney.

Reminder: Crofton Salon Hosts a Cut-A-Thon for Community Center on Sunday, June 6.
