Think Twice Before You Remove That Wall

Bellefield w black-eyed Susan flippedMany homes in Old Crofton and other nearby neighborhoods were built in the 60’s and 70’s.  While they were constructed according to code at the time, the architecture and materials used may not lend themselves to the “open” designs which are popular today, three or four decades later.

It’s not unusual for me to show homes for sale in and around Crofton where a structural wall has been removed to accommodate the new look, and homebuyers love that.

BUT these modifications aren’t always made with structural integrity in mind.

Earlier today, I read a blog post by Virginia home inspector Jay Markanich addressing this issue, and I think it’s important to share with you.  Everyone in the Crofton area who may be thinking about removing a wall should read Watch Your Weight.  And anyone considering the purchase of a home built 3–4 decades ago should read it, as well.

It will make you think twice before removing that wall without consulting an architect or at least a good book on remodeling.  There’s a lot to consider!
