Tax-Free Shopping for Energy Products This Weekend

Update the appliances and other products in your Crofton home this weekend.  February 19–21 is tax-free weekend for Energy Star products in Maryland, and you will save the 6% sales tax.

KitchencroppedQualifying products include new and used air conditioners, clothes washers, clothes dryers, furnaces, heat pumps, standard size refrigerators, compact fluorescent light bulbs, dehumidifiers, boilers and programmable thermostats that have been designated as meeting or exceeding the applicable Energy Star efficiency requirements developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Other types of appliances and equipment do not qualify for exemption even though they may also carry the Energy Star label. Solar water heaters are exempt from sales tax year-round.

The tax-free exemption also applies to catalogue and Internet purchases, provided the seller takes action to immediately fill the order.  Out of state purchases will qualify only if they are delivered by the seller to your Maryland home. In other words, you can’t buy the item in Virginia and carry it home to Maryland.

What happens if you’re charged sales tax on the qualifying item? You may have the tax refunded by filing a refund claim with the Maryland Comptroller’s Office or by calling 1-800-MD-TAXES.

If you’re thinking of updating the appliances in your Crofton home during the next few months, why not do it during Maryland’s Tax Free Weekend?
