University of Maryland (photo copyright Margaret Woda 2010)The University of Maryland has been ranked #6 among the nation’s top 20 colleges and universities by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for offsetting the campus’s carbon footprint with renewable energy.

The University’s purchase of 66 million kilowatt hours of green power last year was funded by a mandatory student fee beginning 2009 at $4 and increasing by $2/year until it reaches $12.  The result:  renewable energy meets 26 percent of the electricity demand on campus.

Rarely a week goes by that I don’t come across more accolades for Maryland’s education programs and institutions.  We are very fortunate to live in a state where education is a priority AND our institutions are recognized nationwide.

Our property value gets another little shot in the arm with each and every new top ranking or award, because relocating home buyers consider quality education one of their top priorities.
