136th Preakness at Pimlico on Saturday

Photo: John Athayde via Creative Commons LicenseMost people can only imagine what it’s like to be in the crowd for an event like the Preakness Stakes, the middle leg in the Triple Crown of horse racing.  You, however, live in Maryland –  and that means you have an opportunity to actually experience it on Saturday, May 21, at Pimlico in Baltimore.

The closest I’ve ever been to the Preakness is the annual Preakness Parade in Baltimore, other than the fact my daughter was a hostess in the VIP hospitality tent when she was in college and my husband sold Preakness merchandise in the infield as a volunteer for a community organization.  Based on their descriptions, it can be quite a different experience at the same event, depending on where you sit.

The Preakness InfieldFest 2011 is a multi-entertainment all-day festival that includes performances on the main stage in the public Infield.  This year’s headliners are national talent Grammy Winners Bruno Mars Train and Hotspur.  Concerts by Mr Greengenes, Phil Vassar and Puddle of Mudd will be featured on the Beer Garden Jagermeister Stage.  Admission is $40 and a “bottomless beer mug” is $60.

Seating in the grandstands ranges from General Admission to any number of upscale reserved seating options.  The easiest way for you to explore what’s still available is to click on Preakness seating information.  Parking regulations are very specific (and parking is pricey), so you’ll want to check that out, as well.

Maryland is the original home of thoroughbred horse-racing, yet horse-racing is now a “dying” industry in our state. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of history, because the future of the Preakness at Pimlico is never certain from one year to the next.

You can get your Preakness tickets at Ticketmaster.
