When will Waugh Chapel South Open?

After a year of construction, Waugh Chapel South is taking shape.  Before long, traffic will be tied up on Route 3 because of vehicles headed to and from the new 80–acre shopping and dining mecca instead of the road construction we’ve experienced for several months.  The completed project will include over a million square feet of integrated retail, office and residential mixed use development.

Target is set to open on March 3, with Dick’s Sporting Goods and Petco following soon after, in April.  Most residents probably aren’t very interested in this news (since locations exist for these retailers within minutes of Crofton already), but there’s real excitement about Regal Cinema opening in June and Wegman’s in October.

Greenburg Gibbons Commercial will manage Waugh Chapel South, as they do The Village at Waugh Chapel, Hunt Valley Towne Center, and Annapolis Town Centre at Parole, named 2010 “Project of the Year“ by the Land Development Council’s Excellence in Community Development Awards.

Here are some of the businesses you can expect to see in 2012 and beyond:

Banks

Entertainment

Restaurants

Retail & Services

This area has come a long way since we moved to Crofton and didn’t mind driving to Bowie or Annapolis for gas or groceries. Many of us remember the uproar of residents over development of the early shopping centers in this area, but that hasn’t prevented us from enjoying their convenience.  I’m sure we’ll soon be happily shopping and dining at Waugh Chapel South, but I hope Crofton’s existing businesses will survive the competition.  Hopefully the county will put a moratorium on future commercial development in this area for a while.
