Volunteer for Crofton Library Day

Postcard - Crofton LibraryJoin your neighbors at Crofton Library on Saturday, October 23, for a day of beautification.  Wear your work clothes, bring your garden gloves and tools, and come prepared to weed, plant daffodil bulbs provided by Crofton Village Garden Club, spread mulch, and rake leaves.  Arrive at 9, and you’ll be headed home by noon.

You’ve probably noticed how the Library grounds have been less attractive lately than in the past.  That’s because county budget cuts have eliminated staff who would have maintained the grounds.  But we don’t have to settle for “ugly” in Crofton, when there are so many people and organizations willing to help.

Of course you can just show up on Saturday, but it would be helpful if you sign up at the Library Information Desk, call (410)222–7915 or email [email protected] so they know how many people to anticipate.  So far, the weather forecast is looking good for Saturday (Sunny, around 64 degrees), but the work-day will be canceled in the event of rain.

Can’t make it on Saturday, October 23?  Mark your calendar for Friday, November 12, when the community effort will be continued.

Don’t Miss Candidate Night in Gambrills MD

VoteThe Greater Crofton Council (GCC) is sponsoring a Candidate Night for local residents tonight at 7 p.m.  Parking is easy at the Community Center in Villages of Waugh Chapel, and you can grab a quick dinner at Chipotle or Atlanta Bread Company en route between your car and the event.

I learned a great deal from the candidate’s night sponsored by GCC before the recent Primary Election, and even changed my choice of candidate, in some cases.

You should attend the event tonight if you haven’t yet heard the two gentleman running for States Attorney, for example.  That’s an election contest I wouldn’t normally think much about, but Eric Grannon and Frank Weathersbee really caught my attention at the previous Candidate’s Night.

That’s probably because the repeat offender who stole the car parked in front of my Crofton home was a beneficiary of current policies in the State’s Attorney office.  Did you know that 95% of criminal cases in Anne Arundel County are plea-bargained and that 25% of crimes in our county are committed by repeat offenders?  Those numbers are frighening!  Thank goodness we experienced only a property crime, and not a violent personal crime.

Yet the incumbent’s own word (repeated throughout his presentation) for why he should be re-elected is “entitled” to keep the job he’s held for 22 years.  Personally, I feel like the citizens of this county are the ones who are “entitled” –  entitled to a strong State’s Attorney who is passionate about keeping us safe through convictions and tough sentences.  I walked away from that Candidate Night feeling like criminals and their attorneys will be very unhappy if Eric Granon is elected.

Please take the time to attend tonight’s Candidate Night. You will feel a lot better about your vote if you actually hear your candidates speak.  Elections are too important to take the lazy choice and just vote for the incumbent because you don’t know anything about either candidate.

Yes, that’s what I’ve done in the past, but I won’t this year!

Beer Week in Baltimore

Crofton Md residents enjoy the opportunity to experience three unique cities within a half hour of home – Baltimore, D.C. and Annapolis.  This week, however, is a better-than-usual time for checking out the pubs, breweries and restaurants in Baltimore.  That’s because it’s Beer Week, through October 17.

BEERIf you missed Baltimore Beer Week over the weekend, there are hundreds of events still remaining for you to attend throughout this week and next weekend.  Getting there from Crofton will probably be easier during the week, as well, since there was a home game for the Ravens yesterday and I’m sure traffic was a nightmare.

I know what you’re thinking… “Why didn’t they have anything like this when I was in college?”  But never fear, you can still enjoy beer breakfasts, beer lunches, and beer dinners, as well as beer contests and beer tastings.  It’s all part of the week-long celebration of Baltimore’s Beer history and culture.  And hopefully you’ll be more responsible about your beer consumption than you would have been in college.  LOL.

There’s a complete listing of events on the official website for Baltimore Beer Week, so click on through to check out the schedule.  Chances are that something is going on at your favorite Baltimore Pub.

What better excuse could you have for visiting the “land of pleasant living” than Beer Week?  All week, including next weekend.  And you’ll be glad to know that the Ravens won’t be playing at home next Sunday, so getting there from Crofton shouldn’t be the traffic mess it was yesterday.

Crofton MD Kids will LOVE Rocknoceros!

Crofton Children’s Centre is hosting an event next Saturday, Oct. 2, to support one of their teachers in her battle against breast cancer.  This will not be a bake sale, and it’s not a “run”…  It’s something MUCH more spectacular, that every kid in Crofton will want to attend.

They’re bringing RocknocerosLogo to Anne Arundel County for a benefit concert!
(And they’re calling it JUICE BOX @ THE WHISKEY)

Rocknoceros (pronounced like rhinoceros), also known as the Rocknos, has dominated the Washington, DC children’s scene since its inception in 2005, winning four Whammies (Washington Area Music Awards) and landing an on-going Video-on-Demand offering through Cox Cable.

As every Crofton family with kids already knows, Rocknoceros is a group of three guys:

RocknocerosCoach Cotton is the ring-leader, frequently immersed in a sea of knee-high concert goers. Wearing a wireless head-set microphone, he wades through the mass of dancing children, dispersing high-fives and shaking a tambourine.

Williebob provides the necessary string work for the show, moving among a collection of guitars, mandolins, and banjos while wearing a kazoo around his neck.

Boogie Woogie Bennie is a one-man-band within the power trio, employing a contraption that one four-year-old fan described as “the piano-drum”. The piano-drum allows Boogie Bennie to play the bass drum with his right foot, the snare drum and hi-hat cymbal with his left foot, and the keyboard with his hands (with his left hand playing the bass parts).

Together, Rocknoceros covers a dizzying range of musical styles… from Tin Pan Alley to the shores of Jamaica, they hop from genre to genre like a toad on summer asphalt.

Local resident Katherine Nicol tells me this group is definitely NOT your typical musical trio!  Bring your whole family to see and hear JUICE BOX @ THE WHISKEY.

WHEN:  Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 11 a.m.-12 p.m.

WHERE:  THE WHISKEY, 1803 West St. Annapolis, MD 21401 (MAP

TICKETS: Just $12.  Visit or call 1-800-255-2071 to order tickets!

Don’t wait to get your tickets, because this concert will probably sell out quickly when kids and parents throughout Anne Arundel County find out Rocknoceros is coming to town.

For a preview of their music, Crofton kids (plus moms, dads, aunts, uncles, and grandparents) can click on Rocknoceros –  and while you’re there, check out the rest of their website.

Many thanks to the Crofton Children’s Center for telling us about this fun event.  Focus On Crofton is happy to support this effort to benefit your teacher.
