Fun Things To Do Near Crofton –  Piney Orchard Street Festival

Piney Orchard
Food, games, music local vendors, entertainment, face-painting, hair-braiding and fun for you and your enitre family are on tap today at Stream Valley Drive in Piney Orchard, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Did someone mention food?  Just to mention a few things you can expect…

BBQ pork and beef, funnel cake, roasted nuts, kettle corn, clam strips, fries, hot dogs, chicken fingers, snow cones, crab cakes, fish sandwiches, ice-cream cocolate-dipped strawberries, fresh fruit and cold drinks.

Entertainment organizers have packed the schedule full of everything from a DJ (Mainscapes) all day to local groups performing on three stages.  That’s right –  not one, not two, but THREE stages.  Here’s the schedule:

Stage A (Strawberry Lake Way):  Big Band Caliente (11:301), Many Marv (2–4) and Adrenalin (4:30–7).

Stage B: Arts N. Motion (1–2) and Win Win Gymnastics (3–4)

Children’s Stage (Community Center): Mayhem Magical Circus (11:30–12:45) and Mrs. Sings Kindermusic (4–5:15)

If you’re not already exhausted from just reading this, here’s more: a moon bounce and a tiki-climbing wall for the kids!

Community organizations and local vendors would appreciate it if you’d stop by to say “hello” when you’re taking a break from all the activities.

Wear walking shoes because you’ll probably have to park some distance from the festival.  Last year, over 5,000 people attended.

Crofton Craft Fair & Chicken Barbecue on Saturday

Follow the smell of barbecued chicken to the Crofton Village Green on Saturday, April 30.  You’ll find boy scouts and parents from Troop 758 toiling over hot grills and boxing chicken for sale.  It’s just $4 for advance purchase (410–451–1674) and $4.50 at the event.

Meanwhile, across the street in the north parking lot of Crofton Country Club, you’ll see rows of white tents housing crafters and community groups at the annual craft fair sponsored by Crofton Town Club.  It’s the perfect opportunity for you to pick up a special hand-made gift item for Mother’s Day.

Crofton Craft Fair

Many Crofton residents look forward to these two events, held semi-annually on the last Saturday of April and September each year.

USNA Dress Parade Open to the Public Today

Worden FieldOne of the benefits of living in Crofton MD is the proximity to all things Annapolis, as well as D.C. and Baltimore.  And what’s more “Annapolis” than the U.S. Naval Academy?

There’s a Brigade of Midshipmen Formal Dress Parade at Worden Field on the Academy grounds today at 4 p.m.  It’s open to the public, so round up the kids and head over there this afternoon.

You can park in one of the public lots in Annapolis and walk to Gate One on King George Street; or, if you have a DOD sticker on your car, you can drive onto the grounds and park just inside Gate One or (if you’re really really lucky) perhaps find a parking spot closer to the parade grounds.  Anyone over 16 will need a photo ID and all cars/bags are subject to search.

Don’t miss an opportunity to see one of these impressive parades –  if not today, watch the USNA website for the schedule of events next fall.  It’s an experience you and your entire family will enjoy, it’s free, and it’s only about 15–20 minutes from Crofton.

Rain Barrell Workshop in Bowie on Saturday

Rain BarrelThe Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce, the City of Bowie, and the Bowie Lions Club are co-sponsoring a program on Rain Barrels Saturday, April 9, 2011.

A rain barrel collects rain water that runs off your roof and stores it for use in your yard and garden.  This will save about 1,300 gallons of water each summer, when you use the stored water for washing your car or watering plants and your lawn.  Besides saving you money, it will help protect local streams from the run-off.

Saturday’s program is free, so mark your calendar now for 9–10:30 a.m. to attend the workshop at 1525 Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 302 in Bowie, MD 20716.
