Crofton Friendly’s Safe for Now

Ice creamFriendly Ice Cream filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week, and I assumed the Crofton location on Rt. 3 would soon be shuttering its doors. Another casualty of this economy, on the heels of Borders Books!

I thought about all the times we and many other families had gathered there after school concerts and plays… about the one on one morning breakfast meetings at Friendly’s and the countless outings shared with family. While I didn’t often splurge on my favorite sundae –  a Jim Dandy, with 5 scoops of ice cream, banana, nuts, chocolate, strawberry sauce, whipped cream and nuts, plus a cherry on top – it would become a thing of the past, like Hot Shoppes “Mighty Mo.”

Steven Overly reported good news in yesterday’s Washington Post: Crofton and four other DC-Baltimore region Friendly’s will remain open.

Maybe if I go to the gym every day this week, I can somehow justify having a Jim Dandy to celebrate that Crofton Friendly’s is safe for now!

Filet Mignon Meets BLT in Crofton MD

Four Seasons - Mignon BLTMatch-ups can happen anywhere, and this one takes place right here in the Crofton area… at Four Seasons Grille in the Village at Waugh Chapel.  Filet Mignon Meets BLT.  No kidding!

If you haven’t yet visited Four Seasons, use the holidays as an excuse to take your spouse or mom or neighbor to lunch for a holiday treat.  They have a different atmosphere than many restaurants in this area –  no old stuff hanging on the wall gathering dust, no 20–somethings serving you in their football jerseys, no TV’s mounted to the wall at every corner of the room, and none of the same ol’ food items on their menu.  In fact, here’s a link to the lunch menu at Four Seasons for you to check it out yourself.

And yes, they have a sandwich called the Mignon BLT.  It’s described as “sliced, grilled filet mignon, pancetta bacon, field greens, tomatoes, smoked mozzarella, mayo, toasted ciabatta bread.”  It’s not just different, it’s good.  Very, very good!

Jasper’s Restaurant is More Than a Landmark

JaspersThere’s more to Jasper’s Restaurant than it’s role as a landmark at the intersection of Routes 3 and 450 in Crofton MD.   It’s a favorite local dining establishment featuring a menu with Jasper’s Crab Explosion, hot Cajun Jambalaya, Sizzling Fajitas, scrumptious desserts and… well, the list goes on and on.

Locals will remember the restaurants that came to this site before Jasper’s (Widow Brown’s Restaurant and the Pigeon House) but no one will argue whether Jasper’s is “the best” – because it IS.  The decor is cozy and friendly, the servers are terrific, the parking is ample, and the food never disappoints.

There’s a large bar area for super-casual dining and hanging out with friends, an attractive dining room that’s divided into distinctive small areas (each with it’s own unique character), and a banquet-room that will accommodate up to 85 guests for dining or 125 for Hors d’oevres (not to mention a permanent dance floor).  They have lunch specials, Sunday Brunch, and any number of other events you’ll enjoy.

So next time you drive past Jasper’s, don’t keep going… turn in and give it a try.

Enjoy March Madness at Damon’s Grill in Gambrills

There’s no place better than Damon’s in the Villages at Waugh Chapel near Crofton for watching the ACC and NCAA Basketball Championships, if you’re not courtside and seeing it live.  The TV in your family room just can’t compare with those giant TV screens in the clubhouse at Damon’s.

Damon's RestaurantAnd, unless you get carry-out from Damon’s, your eats probably won’t compare either.  Chances are good that you’ll find something on the menu to suit your taste – whether it’s a full rack of baby-back ribs, the classic sampler, one of their three new burgers, or the daily special (among other things).

We enjoy dining at Damon’s two or three times a month, and the service is usually as good as the food.  They accept call-ahead seating (410–721–3883) and offer curbside service for carry-out.  In addition to the clubhouse where the TV screens are located, they also have a more quiet traditional dining room with the same menu items.  If you’re looking for a good restaurant near Crofton and haven’t yet dined at Damon’s, you really should give it a try.

By the way, you’ll want to check out Damon’s Courtside Hoopla for an opportunity to win some great prizes with your picks for March Madness.

Great food and service, games and prizes, and March Madness on big-screen TV… what more can you ask for?

Do You Love a Sunday Brunch?

Brunch at Buddy's Cab HouseBuddy’s Crabs & Ribs is one place I always recommend to anyone relocating to Crofton MD and the surrounding area.

While Buddy’s does have an extensive menu and daily specials, my family really loves their “all-you-can-eat” Sunday Brunch.  We’ve made it a point to go there at least monthly for several years.  The cost is modest at just $12.95.

PC270197The buffet is fabulous…  made-to-order omelettes and Belgian waffles, and about four buffet tables full of fruits, pastries, and other items.  The Bloody Mary’s and Mimosa’s aren’t bad either.

Buddy’s is located at the foot of Main Street, with a 2nd-floor view of the Annapolis Harbour and Main Street (from 2nd story windows of building on the right in this photo).

We almost always head out to play tourist after dining at Buddy’s, stopping in the various downtown shops and strolling along Ego Alley to admire the boats docked there.  It makes for a really enjoyable outing!

If you love going out for Sunday Brunch, be sure to check out Buddy’s any Sunday between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  You might just become a regular, like so many of your Crofton area neighbors.
